Ceramic coating vs. wax: which one actually makes sense for your truck?

A clear-eyed comparison of wax, sealant, ceramic spray, and pro-grade ceramic coating — what they protect against, how long they last, and what each one costs.

We get this question every week. The answer depends on three things: how long you're keeping the vehicle, how often you wash it, and how much abuse it sees.

Here's the field, in plain English.

Carnauba wax

The classic. Smells great. Goes on by hand or with a buffer. Lasts 4–8 weeks in Indiana weather, less if you actually drive the vehicle. Fine for show cars that live in a garage. Not the right call for a daily driver — you'll be re-applying every month.

Cost: $60–$120 for a wax-only service. Best for: Show cars. Weekend cruisers. Customers who enjoy the ritual.

Synthetic sealant

The middle of the road. Cheaper than ceramic, more durable than wax. 3–6 months of protection. Goes on as part of any Signature Detail. The right call if you're not sure how long you'll have the vehicle, or if you wash it yourself and want a slicker, easier surface for a few months at a time.

Cost: Included in our Signature Detail. Best for: Daily drivers. Family SUVs. Vehicles you'll keep 1–2 years.

Ceramic spray sealant

The new entrant. Real Si02 chemistry in a spray-on form. 9–12 months of protection. Comes standard with our Elite Showroom package. Easier to apply than a full ceramic coating but won't last as long.

Cost: Included in Elite Showroom; $150–$250 as a standalone. Best for: Customers who want ceramic-level slickness without committing to a full coating.

Professional ceramic coating

The real thing. 3- to 5-year manufacturer warranty. Permanent bonded layer of hardened SiO2 over your clear coat. Slides salt, brine, and bird droppings right off. Makes washing the vehicle 3x faster. Hands-down the best ROI if you're keeping the vehicle long-term.

There's a real installation process behind this — two-stage paint correction, IPA panel wipe-down, climate-controlled cure time. We don't sell shortcuts on this one.

Cost: $900–$1,800 depending on size and product chosen. Best for: Trucks. Daily drivers you're keeping 3+ years. Black or dark-color paint that shows every swirl. Customers in Louisville's metro who'd otherwise pay $2,500+ in town.

So which one?

  • Selling the vehicle in 6 months? Sealant. Don't overspend.
  • Keeping it 1–2 years? Sealant or ceramic spray.
  • Keeping it 3+ years and you drive a lot of miles? Professional ceramic coating. Easy decision.
  • Black F-150 you want looking like glass? Professional ceramic coating, no question.
